Seasonal GardeningLet’s talk winter planting! It doesn’t all have to be hot chocolates and ugg boots we can still enjoy our gardens. Here at Everything About Garden we have taken the challenge to give you our top 10 Plants for winter colour! We are always well stocked and ready to fill your garden needs.
10. Azalea spp
You can’t think of a classic Australian garden and go past the ever-brilliant Azalea. These evergreen shrubs will grow to between 1.5-2m and love a light prune to promote new growth. Our gorgeous Christine Matton will bring a blast of pink to your garden through the winter months and into spring. Pop them in a nice, protected spot and watch them go. 9. Anigozanthos (kangaroo paw)
The Kangaroo paw is ever present in the Australian landscape. Great in pots and containers or mixed in with other planting the recognisable paw like flower will burst through later in the winter and give you almost six months’ worth of joy. Place in a sheltered spot to avoid any major frosts and our Bush Glow will keep you feeling warm. <link to shop>
8.Camellia spp
With dryer spells well behind us the Camellia is making a comeback our gardens. Our smaller leaved Sasanquas and larger leaved Japonicas are sure to make the top 10. 7.Erigeron Spindrift
Don’t pass on the chance to add some seaside feel to your garden with our Erigeron or Seaside daisy. Its multiple uses and multiple floral splashes make this a must have this winter. Erigeron is tough little battler, put it into almost any condition or aspect and watch it flower for almost 12 months of the year! Don’t take our word though, plant away today. <link to shop>
6. Tibouchina Jazzie
Sticking with the classics, Tibouchina Jazzie will keep you feeling fine through the cooler months. Jazzie is a smaller growing shrub form of Tibouchina and form a nice round habit with the impressive purple flowers showing through early winter. Jazzie will love a prune after flowering and a good feed coming into the winter. <link to shop>
5. Olive spp
Its not just flowers that make a garden feel nice during Winter. It can be a time to bring in some different structures or tones. For a Mediterranean feel why not try our Olives? We are stocking Olea Frantoio and Manzanillo this season. Olive trees have beautiful two toned leaves and make a stunning specimen plant in the garden or in a pot. They are an amazing addition, once established, refrain from giving them too much water. <link to shop>
4. Metrosideros Thomasii
Sticking to the tones for colour why not try our Metrosideros thomassi. With its grey-green leaves turning glossy with age this resilient shrub is great from hedging, bordering or even being a feature in your garden. Plant now to reap the benefits of those incredible crimson flowers in the spring. It is certainly one of the best things to come out New Zealand! <link to shop>
3. Rosa spp (carpet rose)
Now you may not think that winter and Roses go well together. In part I cannot argue with you however our flower carpet red roses are hardy and will not stop flowering even if you ask them too! Carpet by name carpet by reputation these crackers will stay no more than 1m off the ground and will thrive in almost all conditions. Why not have something that you can pick flowers from while drinking your hot chocolate this winter! <link to shop>
2. Magnolia Teddy Bear
Narrowly missing out on the number one is the Magnolia Teddy Bear. Shorter and fluffier (obviously) than its more traditional colours you cannot go wrong with Teddy Bear. With the darker glossy foliage with a larger leaf the Teddy bear will look great in a feature pot or in a feature spot in the garden. Play with your colours surrounding the Teddy and it will be a talking point at your next dinner party. <link to shop>
1. Carex Feather Falls
Beating them all and coming in at number 1 is maybe a surprise inclusion. The Carex Feather Falls is the ultimate king of elegance. Watch the striking cascading foliage bring something different and vibrant to your garden or containers. This hardy little fellow is something that your neighbours don’t have but will want.
